Gail Ackerman
Gail Ackerman has been practicing and teaching Iyengar Yoga for 30 + years. She is certified at the Intermediate level. Her very first introduction to hatha yoga came while growing up in the mountains of Evergreen, Colorado. She came to the Iyengar method in 1980 to explore and heal her scoliosis and chronic sciatica pain exacerbated by making her living as a production potter. Within weeks of beginning her daily Iyengar practice she discovered the back pain she’d been living with for years was becoming less acute.
She has been blessed with several opportunities to study with both BKS Iyengar and his daughter Geeta both in Pune, India and during their travels to the US. She continues to study with Senior Iyengar teachers, including Patricia Walden and Manouso Manos. Taking to heart a quote by BKS Iyengar, just months before he passed “Let my end be your beginning..” She strives to bring freshness and beginners mind to every body in every practice. She teaches to the real bodies in front of her, not a play list of poses. Every class is different with common threads of information woven into each practice. She is compassionate and capable in her teaching to those new to the practice as well as long time students of the art.
The therapeutic applications of Iyengar yoga practice- learning the skill of aligning one’s skeleton and musculature to support and nourish the body- are endless. The uses of various props allow EVERY body to access the essence of any given pose.
“When we free ourselves from physical disabilities, emotional disturbances and mental distractions we open the gates to our soul.”
“Yoga does not change the way we see things, it changes the person who sees.”- BKS Iyengar
